Trump posts senator’s mobile number in heated daylight savings battle
As millions of Australians move their clocks forward for daylight saving, Donald Trump has railed against the process.

US President Donald Trump’s fight with a Republican ally over a daylight saving time bill has hit a new level after Trump posted the senator’s phone number online and urged people to call him. Trump is backing a push to make daylight savings time permanent in the US, saying clock-switching throughout the year was bad for farmers, the economy, the crime rate and golf. The bill would end daylight savings switches in the US, meaning citizens would not have to change their clocks twice a year, despite the fluctuating daylight hours between seasons. “Nobody wants to spend their precious time running all over the place, turning Clocks back twice a year and, having sunshine in the afternoon is better than early in the morning!”

Trump wrote on Truth Social overnight. “To the Great People of Arkansas, please let your Senator know it would be a GREAT Bipartisan WIN for the United States Senate, and for America, itself.

Call Tom on his cellphone at, (redacted), and let him know.” Cotton, for his part, said that every time the US had made daylight saving permanent in the past, it had later reversed the measure. “No one likes changing the clock, me included, but Congress has enacted permanent Daylight Savings Time multiple times before and repealed it each time once Americans experienced absurdly late sunrises in the winter,” he said. “Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark, and I’ll always put Arkansas first.” Trump, in response, said putting Arkansas first would mean giving them an “extra hour” of daylight. “TAKE THE WIN TOM, JUST TAKE THE WIN!

YOU NEED IT, AND SO DOES OUR BELOVED REPUBLICAN PARTY!” he wrote. Notably, the president didn’t resort to his tried-and-tested tactics of personal vitriol, even referring to Cotton as a “friend”. “Republicans in the Senate have to get moving on what I call the ‘No More Changing of Clocks Act,’ officially known as The Sunshine Protection Act, a ridiculous Clock changing process that takes place twice a year, costs our Country a fortune, is bad for Crime, stress on people, Sports, and just about everything else you can imagine,” Trump had earlier written on Truth Social. Alvarez "Even the highly respected PGA Commissioner, Brian Rolapp, needs it for the completion of Golf Tournaments in the Winter, when they just plain run out of sunlight." Trump went on to tout the health and economic benefits of daylight savings. "Leading Medical, Crime, and Economic Studies have shown, conclusively, that ceasing the biannual time change, giving us one extra hour of natural sunlight in the evenings, will help Decrease Robbery and Murder Rates, Reduce Car Accidents (especially those involving Pedestrians!),

Lower Risk for Cardiac Issues, Stroke, and Seasonal Depression, Make It Safer for Children to Walk Home from School, Increase Time with your Family, Strongly Support Extracurricular Activities, Boost the Sports, Fitness, Tourism, Retail, and Restaurant Industries (and more!),

and Save Money on Energy Bills, because everyone will be enjoying an EXTRA HOUR OF DAYLIGHT," he wrote. "In other words, leave it as it is now, and never change it again." Why daylight savings? New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT all put their clocks forward an hour overnight. It meant losing an hour of sleep in those jurisdictions, as the gap between 2am and 3am effectively vanishes. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory won't be moving their clocks. Trump said abolishing daylight saving should be a priority for Congress. AP Photo/Alex Brandon The issue of daylight saving is divided on geographic rather than partisan lines in Congress and around the United States. If daylight saving was made permanent, it would mean the sun wouldn't come up in Chicago and New York until 8.20am and Seattle until 9am in the middle of winter. In parts of North Dakota, the sunrise wouldn't happen until 9.30am. The purpose of daylight saving is to make better use of natural daylight and reduce energy consumption depending on the time of year. During the warmer months, this means moving the clocks forward to enjoy more sun in the evenings. The sun will rise an hour later in places like Sydney tomorrow morning, as far as the clocks are concerned. Getty In the cooler months, the clocks are moved back so Aussies can make the most of morning light. Not all Australian states and territories observe daylight saving. While New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory change their clocks twice a year, Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory have opted out. This is largely because Queensland, much of WA and the NT are closer to the equator, so the difference in daylight hours doesn't vary as much across the seasons in those regions.
